RIM simplifies licensing of music for ringtones
Monday, 29 August 2005

Image PETALING JAYA: The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) has set up a one-stop centre to licence local music repertoire for digital distribution.

The move is to address the complex licensing issues associated with the digital distribution of music, it said. But for now the licensing is restricted to ringtones, as a test.

“We have created a one-stop payment centre within RIM, rather than having the content provider go about obtaining many different licences from the various licensing bodies,” said RIM chairman Sandy Monteiro.

Parents beware - syndicates using students to sell pirated VCDs
Wednesday, 09 June 2004
KUALA LUMPUR June 8 - Parents with school-going children should keep tab on their movements as many are now being lured by syndicates to peddle pirated video compact discs (VCDs), Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Enforcement Division (Operations) Deputy Director-General Zainal Abidin Mohd Noordin said Tuesday.

He said syndicates were discreetly hiring secondary school students to sell the pirated copies to evade the authorities' dragnet.

The syndicates used students as they find this modus operandi effective to dispose off the pirated versions, he told a media conference.

Since April 1999, he said, the division had detained 48 students, aged between 15 and 17, for peddling pirated VCDs.
