Recording Industry Association of Malaysia

The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) is the national industry trade association set up to represent the locally incorporated recording companies in Malaysia. RIM currently represents 102 such companies and businesses, all of which are involved in the production, manufacturing and distribution of local and international sound, music video and karaoke recordings. This accounts for approximately 95% of all legitimate recordings in the music market of Malaysia.

Pirated CDs: Shopping complex owners, landlords being sued

SERI KEMBANGAN: The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) is suing landlords who rent their premises to pirated discs retailers.

RIM has already taken six such landlords to court in its fight against music piracy.

Its chief executive officer Tan Ngiap Foo said RIM had sued six landlords for damages and applied for injunctions from the High Court to permanently ban them from renting their premises to pirated discs retailers.

Dealer to face music over ringtones sale

PENANG: A 24-year-old mobile phone dealer who was nabbed on Tuesday at Prangin Mall will be charged in court today for selling ringtones illegally. The 24-year-old dealer was nabbed at 3.30pm during Ops Tulen Muzik 2006, an operation jointly conducted by the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) and the state Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry enforcement division.

Going after music kiosks

JOHOR BARU: The music industry will lose more than RM36mil a year if mobile phone subscribers choose to purchase illegal ringtones from 3,000 makeshift kiosks or pasar malam stalls nationwide.

In a bid to prevent this, the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) has launched a nationwide operation on illegal operators and recorded its first success in Johor.

Two kiosks containing 90,773 songs and ringtones were seized and a 25-year-old operator detained in a raid jointly conducted by RIM and the state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs office at KipMart Tampoi at 3.40pm on Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: It just got even easier for local content developers and telecommunications companies to utilise music in their services.

The Recording Industry of Malaysia (RIM) and Malaysian Music Publishers Bhd (MMP) have agreed to a standard copyright fee of 8% of any royalties gained from the digital use of a song or a piece of music.

Also, a content developer or telco now only needs to approach RIM for permission to use the music instead of going to the particular label, which can be time-consuming if there are several songs involved.

KUALA LUMPUR: Landlords be warned. Know your tenants well.

From next year, building owners can be charged in court if pirated materials are found stored or sold in their property.

Owners cannot claim ignorance by saying that they are renting out their premises, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal.

They must be held responsible for their premises and, hopefully, this will teach them to be more careful about who they rent the premises to.
